Alfred and Margaret Gatty arrived in Ecclesfield where Alfred had been appointed Vicar in 1839. He stayed until his death in 1903. Margaret became a children's author of the first rank and impressive marine biologist. Alfred was also an author of some renown. They raised a very talented family of four boys and four girls. Two of the sons were knighted and one of the daughters, Juliana, became even more famous than her mother as a children's author. The whole family were involved in writing stories, poems, songs, carols; engaging in amateur theatricals, gardening, botanising, sketching, learning their lessons, visiting the old and infirm, going to parties and dances, suffering from toothache and even suspected smallpox.... meet this Victorian vicar's family...they rival the Brontes !

The Story of a Nomadic Wife:

By Mel amd Joan Jones. Green Tree Publications. 2007. 84 pages of fascinating detail accompanied by more than 50 illustrations. This is the story of the life and times of Juliana Ewing, the Ecclesfield-born children's writer, during her travels around Britain 1879-1883. this was when she was separated from her soldier-husband who had been posted abroad and she was too unwell to accompany him. Being an army wife who lived in barracks or a rented house near an army base all her married life, she had no home to go to. So she stayed with friends and relatives all round the country, including Ecclesfield and grenoside, all the time suffering from bouts of debilitating ill-health but still writing furiously and dealing with publishers and illustrators. During this period she wrote a number of her best-loved stories including Jackanapes and Daddy Darwin's Dovecote. The book is largely based on her diaries and hundreds of letters that she wrote to her husband during their sepaparation. This is a fantastic story; get your copy of this limited edition publication while stocks last.
